Inspection of Plastic Tube Slides

1. Inspection Frequency

  • Daily: Visual inspection for obvious hazards.  Ensure a process is in place to receive and document concerns from field personnel and users.

  • Weekly: More detailed inspection for wear and tear. More frequent inspections will allow for changes and differences to be recognized.

  • Monthly: Comprehensive inspection, including structural integrity.

  • Annually: Professional assessment and deep maintenance check.

2. Required Tools & Equipment

  • Flashlight

  • Safety gloves and goggles

  • Screwdriver or wrench

  • Cleaning cloth, soft sponge, microfiber cloth and mild detergent.  Cleaning materials must be non-toxic and non-petroleum product.

  • Inspection checklist (provided by the manufacturer or facility)

3. Inspection Steps

A. Structural Integrity Check

  1. Inspect joints and connections for loose or missing bolts.

        a. At entrance

        b. Tube to Tube

       c.  Tube to Support

       d. Support to column

       e. Column to pier

  2. Look for cracks, dents, or damage to the tube sections. As the tube ages, you may see SPIDERING.

       a. Check for smooth

       b. Minor surface flaws should not breach through material

       c. Cuts or gouges may need to be sanded or trimmed to remove sharp edges

  3. Ensure all fasteners are secure and not protruding.  If nut is used, bolts should not extend more than 2 threads past the nut

  4. Test the slide’s stability  and connections by applying slight pressure.  Frequent inspections will help recognize changes, or determine loose areas.

B. Surface Condition

  1. Examine the interior and exterior for sharp edges or rough spots.

  2. Check for graffiti, vandalism, or any obstructions inside the tube.

  3. Ensure the surface is clean and free of debris.

C. Safety Features Inspection

  1. Verify that guardrails and entry barriers are intact and secure.

  2. Check that the slide’s exit area is safe and free from obstacles.

  3. Ensure that the landing zone has proper surfacing material.

D. Environmental Factors

  1. Look for signs of rust or corrosion, especially in metal components.
  2. Inspect for water accumulation inside the tube, which may lead to mold.
  3. Check surrounding playground equipment and landscaping for hazards.
  4. Inside and Outside of tube should be checked.

4. Maintenance & Repairs

  • Tighten loose bolts and replace missing fasteners.

  • Smooth out rough or sharp edges with sandpaper or a buffer.

  • Remove graffiti and clean surfaces with appropriate cleaning agents.

In some cases, products such as ARMOR ALL (R) have been used to clean plastics.  This should NEVER be used on the interior or bedway of the slide.  A film is left that feels greasy, and may change the rate of passenger descent.  Always ensure to follow manufacturer's instructions and test the cleaner on a small and inconspicuous area first to confirm compatibility. Mild dish detergents may be needed to assist in cleaning.  Extra effort may need to be applied for sticky spills or bird dropping.  Be sure to rinse all agents from slide after application of cleaning materials.

  • Replace damaged sections immediately to prevent injuries.

Materials to NOT use in cleaning LLDPE Plastic

    1. Bleach or chlorine: This can cause fading and brittleness.  Do not mix bleach and vinegar.

    2. Ammonia Based Cleaners: Can weaken the plastic structure

    3. Abrasive Cleaners or Scouring Powders

    4. Acetone or harsh solvents

    5. Petroleum Based Cleaners

    6. Power Washers can damage plastic!

    7. Nitric Acid or Fuming Sulfuric Acid

5. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain an inspection log with dates and findings. Photographs are useful in future comparison and identification.

  • Report any major safety concerns to maintenance personnel or owner/operator authorities.

  • Keep records of repairs and parts replaced.

6. Safety Precautions

  • Conduct inspections during non-peak hours to avoid interference with users.

  • Wear appropriate safety gear when handling tools or chemicals.

  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for part replacements and repairs.

7. Conclusion
